afro poof wigHow would you like to look and feel like a 70s disco dancer at your next Halloween party?

70s disco costumes are a wonderful way to show off your dance style and there is something to suit everyone from this era.

From far out and psychadelic outfits, to cute pretty mini dresses with flowery and geometric prints, you will fit in anytime there is a fancy dress party or Halloween bash.

I love this look, the amazing imaginative prints, the minimal fresh makeup, it’s a look that is easy to replicate just by pulling on a cute 70s disco costume.

Saturday Night Fever CostumeThe men have a an easy time to get an instant recognisable effect, think “Saturday Night Fever” and you instantly think of that iconic white suit worn by John Travolta.  Wear a few gold chains and perhaps a medalion or two and you will get the look in an instant.

If white isn’t your thing, then there are loads of bright, patterned shirts around that will get you noticed in an instant, worn with black trousers they are fabulous.

Afro hair in the seventies was allowed to grow free, so an afro wig will create a superb 70s disco look.  You can get them in white too for a more striking effect.

funkin dancing foxThe ladies have a bit more work on their hands to get an authentic effect.  Regarding makeup and hair, the desired effect was to look like a beach babe with a golden tan and flicky soft hair, preferably with natural blonde highlights, but definitely flicky.

Think “Farrah Fawcett” and the “Charlies Angels”, they had that look down to a tee.  For the disco they would keep the natural makeup, maybe brightening the colors a little, but the tan was essential.  (Try using some all over body fake tan, the cake foundation is fabulous and gives a sexy glow, think J-Lo).  The range of party clothes was wide, the crazy patterns and colors, the micro mini skirts,  the big jewelry and go go boots.

abba swirl costumeFabulous bell bottoms like this “Funky Dancin’ Fox” costume” in silky fabrics, cute mod outfits and slinky dresses were all worn to the discos, where the dancers would compete for attention, both on and off the dance floor.  It was a fantastic era for self expression, no wonder it is still so popular today some 40 years on.  I love this “Wild Swirl Dress” as it is so feminine and fun.

Tips for the Single Ladies:

Halloween is a time when we all want to shine, but try to ignore the lure of the sexy cat or vampiress costumes, it’s old hat and obvious in my book.

mini 70s costume Yes it’s a good type of costume to get guy’s pulses racing, but there are other ways you can do that won’t get you the jealous looks from the other ladies (and your friends) at the party.

And here is why: men simply love colour!  If you wear a 70s disco costume not only will you cut a dash on the dance floor in an authentic outfit (it’s hard to stay in character in a vampire costume while “doing the Hustle”) but the beautiful colours flashing by will dazzle them.

Check out this Abba effect dress: the Retro Groove costume.  It’s a lovely dress and so pretty!  Wear it with a pair of platform boots and you are good to dance the night away!

I’ve seen icha cha bootst time and again (I tend to like to get my groove on anytime there is a costume party).  It’s also a fun theme and men will perceive you as a girl who likes to have a laugh.  There’s no better aphrodisiac.

The seventies era was a creative time, where there was a lot of inventiveness in the music, dance, in film and art, my aunt worked with Ossie Clark the fashion designer and she had some stories to tell!  Mick Jagger was cheeky and Liz Taylor was refined, Twiggy was a sweet girl and the list goes on.

I have a beautiful one off piece made by her in fabric by Celia Birtwell; it has bell sleeves and large ties that do up at the sides.  If I want to wear it I need to go on a diet for at least 2 weeks, but it’s worth it for the feeling of pride for the  fact that my wonderful, patient aunt made it with her dextrous hands and fine mind.
